Case Study
Brief
To commemorate Pride Month, produce an LGBTQ+ mini-documentary centred around Charlz Ng, a dedicated volunteer for the Gay Games and a notable figure within the event organisation industry. Through this documentary, look into Charlz's personal journey, shedding light on his struggles and evolution as he grappled with self-discovery and his upbringing.
Creative Direction
In crafting this documentary, our approach was thoughtfully structured as follows:
Addressing Problem: The video opens by introducing the audience to Charlz's struggles, setting the tone for his journey.

Action: We explored Charlz's proactive steps to surmount the challenges he faced, providing insight into his path of resilience.

Continued Pursuit of Goals: Emphasising that his actions constitute a mere step towards a broader objective, we illustrate that accomplishments often amount to a continuous collective venture. This imparts a hopeful and optimistic outlook for the future, highlighting how greatness is perpetuated from one generation to the next—ultimately achieved through incremental progress.

Considering the retrospective nature of this documentary, we chose to employ film roll effects, artfully incorporating old photos and footage provided by Charlz. This technique not only lends a nostalgic touch but also effectively illustrates his journey over time. Additionally, we introduced scenes where Charlz revisits old photos—a poignant journey through memory lane, capturing significant people and pivotal moments in his life.

To ensure a comprehensive exploration of themes, we invited Charlz's close friends for a roundtable discussion. This facilitated an open and candid discourse on various topics, addressing issues and misconceptions surrounding the LGBTQ+ community. The inclusion of this dialogue enriches the documentary by offering diverse perspectives and fostering a more nuanced understanding of the subject matter.
Challenges
While conversations about LGBTQ+ are becoming increasingly open on a global scale, certain regions in Asia may require more time to foster greater acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. Our objective was to normalise this community and educate individuals who might be less inclined to embrace LGBTQ+ identities. Simultaneously, we aimed to provide a platform for the LGBTQ+ community to share their personal experiences.
We aspired not only to broaden perspectives but also to accurately represent the multifaceted LGBTQ+ community. Our intention was to effect change in outlook and to generate a positive impact through the narrative we crafted. Our hope is that this film serves as a catalyst for progress, contributing to the journey of greater understanding and acceptance.
